Homeless Ministry
A few months after she started as leader of Bread of Life, a homeless ministry based out of The Rock Church in San Diego, Estreanda Fulford was approached by a man who made a simple but honest statement. “I don’t want to be homeless anymore.” He then said, “I just need a bus pass.”
In that moment Estreanda could have looked at the man's matted hair, grubby face and tattered clothes, and assumed the general perception toward the homeless: that he was another careless drug addict making an empty promise until his next fix.
But she didn’t. Instead, she saw someone God deeply loves. Someone whose life He could radically change if she took a step to help.
Then and there she decided to do something. She bought him a bus pass.
A month later, the man returned and looked Estreanda in eye as he told her that he got a job. And a month after that, he came back again and proudly said that he had earned a promotion to manager.
He now faithfully attends the ministry and faithfully tithes his income back into the community.
This ministry strives to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the homeless community where they are, as we live out the teachings of Jesus by loving our neighbors as ourselves. Estreanda could have looked at the outward appearance, but she chose to see a stranger as God does. She recognized his heart and his desire to change. She decided to do something and in turn, became part of a miracle.
